The Chartis Center for Rural Health has released its annual list of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) for 2021. Included on the list was Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk.

CAH is a designation given to eligible rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that have 25 or fewer acute care inpatient beds and provide 24/7 emergency care. The CAH designation is designed to reduce the financial vulnerability of rural hospitals and improve access to health care by keeping essential services in rural communities.

Based entirely on public data and utilizing 36 independent indicators, hospitals are assessed on market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and financial efficiency.
