Wisconsin had the nation’s second largest collection for a total of 60,472 pounds during the Oct. 26 biannual Drug Take Back Day, according to an announcement by Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul. According to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), which sponsors the event, Texas came in first with 72,329 pounds collected.
Statewide, 280 law enforcement agencies hosted Drug Take Back events to provide a safe means of disposal. Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain because water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them
The collected medications were secured for transportation to Covanta Energy Corporation in Indianapolis, Ind., where they were incinerated.
